FAQ

You've got questions, we have answers. Here's everything you need to know about tattoo removal at Alkhemist.

  • Laser tattoo removal works by using a pico laser, which delivers short, intense pulses of light that target the ink particles in your tattoo. The laser's energy breaks these ink particles down into smaller fragments, which your body’s natural processes then gradually remove. Over a series of treatments, the tattoo fades as more ink is broken down and cleared away by your body. Pico lasers are particularly effective because they work on a wide range of ink colors and are designed to minimize damage to the surrounding skin, making the process safer and more efficient.

  • The number of treatments you’ll need for laser tattoo removal depends on several factors, including the size, color, and age of your tattoo, as well as your skin type. On average, most people require at least 4-6 sessions to achieve significant fading or complete removal. Vibrant colors like blues and greens may take a bit longer. Sessions are usually spaced about 6 to 8 weeks apart to allow your skin time to heal between treatments. During your consultation, we can give you a more personalized estimate based on your specific tattoo.

  • A good candidate for tattoo removal is someone who is in generally good health and has realistic expectations about the process. Laser tattoo removal works well for most skin types and can effectively target a wide range of ink colors. If you have any skin conditions, are pregnant, or have certain medical conditions, it’s important to discuss these with your practitioner to determine if tattoo removal is right for you.

  • Tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, but the level of discomfort varies from person to person. Most people describe the sensation as similar to getting the tattoo in the first place—like a quick snap from a rubber band against the skin, combined with a bit of heat. The good news is that the discomfort is usually brief, as the laser works quickly. To help manage any pain, we can apply a numbing cream before the treatment, and many find that this makes the process much more comfortable. After the session, your skin might feel a bit sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn, but this typically fades within a day or two.

  • The cost of tattoo removal depends on the size of your tattoo. Book a free consultation with our Skin Experts to get a quote for how much each session will cost.

  • It's important to get your tattoo removal done by a trained professional using the best lasers available on the market. Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, and slight discomfort in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. In some cases, you might experience blistering or scabbing, which usually heals within a couple of weeks. There’s also a small risk of changes in skin pigmentation, especially if you have a darker skin tone—this could mean lightening (hypopigmentation) or darkening (hyperpigmentation) of the skin in the treated area. Scarring is rare but possible, especially if the aftercare instructions aren’t followed carefully.

  • Before your tattoo removal treatment it's important to limit sun exposure, tanning beds, and self tanners for at least 2 weeks prior to your appointment. Avoid using any active ingredients like AHAs, BHAs, or retinoids on the area for at least 7 days prior. Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours before your treatment.

  • Immediately after your treatment you may see some "frosting" on the treated area. Redness and swelling are also normal. If needed you can apply a cold compress to the area. The treated area should be cared for delicately until healing is complete and take care to avoid any trauma to the area for the first week after your treatment. Clean the treated area daily allowing water to run over it before pattting the area dry. Apply Aquaphor to the treated area and cover with a nonstick sanitary gauze pad until the area is fully healed. Do not pick, peel, rub, scrub, or scratch the skin throughout the healing process. If you experience blistering, do not pop or pick at them. Avoid swimming or using hot tubs, saunas, or spas until the area is healed. Avoid excessive sweating and direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours post treatment.
